Swimming Drama: Barracuda

If you're into competitive swimming, I recommend this Australian 4-part TV drama Barracuda. It's a glimpse into what it takes to become a swimming champion. But it's also a salutory tale about the perils of losing perspective of all the things that are important in life, when you focus on winning one thing to the exclusion of all else. Beware of the simplistic "all or nothing" mentality, it can poison you.

Available on BBC iplayer until 17 March 2017.

Restore Britain's Historic Swimming Pools

30 September saw the launch of a campaign to restore Britain's Victorian and Edwardian swimming pools, such as Camberwell Baths in London. Historic Pools of Britain promotes the restoration of these pools so the public can enjoy swimming in some of Britain's most iconic indoor swimming pools.

Haggerston Baths on Whitstone Road, Hackney, has been put up for sale by Hackney Council, after the property has stood derelict for 15 years. The council say it would take £25 million to restore this swimming pool, and they can't afford to do it. The failure to secure the premises resulted in vandals gaining access and covering all surfaces with graffiti, and there was evidence of squatting. Campaigners failed to get this pool listed as an "asset of community value", which is bizarre given that London is crying out for more good quality swimming pools. This is yet another example of failure to prioritise what's most important: decent sports and fitness facilities for a deprived London borough in which obesity levels are high, and youth crime is high. If central government valued the nation's health, it would contribute to some of the restoration costs, so that Hackney Council wouldn't have to foot the full bill.

Personal trainers in London who are also swimming instructors: Rob Popper (Triathlon House, Paddington) and Angela Chapman (Strictly Swimming; in City of London, Knightsbridge, Tower Bridge, and Fulham) to name just two.

Rio 2016 Olympics

Team GB took silver in the 4 x 100 relay.

Michael Phelps took multiple golds this olympics. He is the most successful olympic swimmer of all time.

Congratulations to Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow for their bronze on the 10m synchronised dive.

Gold medals for Team GB's Jack Laugher and Chris Mears for the 3m synchronised diving. Awesome performance, beating the Chinese, a super-human achievement.

Adam Peaty wins gold in the 100m breaststroke, having smashed the world record in the earlier heats. The 21 year old hated water as a small kid, and would cry whenever he went into the water. Meanwhile Jazz Carlin takes silver in the women's 400m freestyle.

Are you a keen swimmer in London? Which are the best swimming pools in London in your experience? Does your pool have lane swimming, so you're not bumping into kids at the shallow end? Are the showers and changing area clean and well maintained? Does your pool have chlorine or is it ozone treated? Let me know and I'll feature it on this page.

Are you into Triathlon or Openwater races? Check out Swimfortri.com, a London based swim company founded by brother and sister Dan and Keeley Bullock. They coach swimming for budding triathletes and openwater race enthusiasts.

What is the quietest time to swim at the Aquatics Centre Stratford? Let me know!

Swimming is a fantastic way to get fit in London, particularly in the winter whenthe weather is cold and wet, or even freezing. It's great for cardiovascular fitness, and muscular strength (broad shoulders in particular) and endurance too. When the London 2012 olympic pool in Stratford E15 finally opens to the general public, you'll see just what a test of fitness a full size 50 metre long pool is. For a city the size of London, two Olympic swimming pools is not enough, but it's a small step in the right direction. When I lived in Australia I got a taste of what a nation which takes sport seriously looks like. Even small towns like Cairns in Queensland had a 50m olympic pool (outdoor) and a thriving programme of swimming coaching and competitions.

Swimming requires a great deal of muscular endurance, and cardiovascular fitness (strong heart and strong lung capacity too). Why not hire a personal trainer in London to give your swimming fitness a turbo-boost? For maximum benefits from your swimming, vary your strokes, and include some breast-stroke, front-crawl (freestyle), back-stroke, and butterfly stroke.

Shoulder flexibility is vital for all swimming strokes, and a personal trainer can help you with shoulder stretches to make you a more effective swimmer.
