What is Pilates and does it get you fit?

Pilates
is a studio-based physical exercise system with a long pedigree. It originated in Germany in the 1930's, thanks to an exercise pioneer of the pre-war era Joseph Pilates. Inspired by the physical prowess of the athletes of ancient Greece, Joseph Pilates created a regime of exercise to enable people to achieve optimum physical fitness indoors. He called his system 'Contrology', but over time it became known as Pilates. (I think pilates sounds better. Contrology sounds like a creepy brainwashing cult, the kind which Hollywood celebrities join, mentioning no names for legal reasons).

How does Pilates get you fit? For a start it increases your flexibility. It also builds muscular strength and endurance (but no significant muscle growth). It promotes optimum alignment of your spine and pelvis, core strength (including the deep muscles such as the transverse abdominis), balance & co-ordination, and effective breathing. It won't give you big muscles, nor will it increase your aerobic fitness. A good pilates instructor will take into account each individual's anatomical structure, as everyone is different. Over time you'll learn better movement patterns and posture and breathing techniques.

Joseph Pilates wrote two bestselling books:
Your Health: A Corrective System of Exercising That Revolutionizes the Entire Field of Physical Education (1934)
Return to Life Through Contrology (1945)

There are two main types of Pilates, Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates. In Joseph Pilates second book there are 34 mat exercises. Reformer Pilates uses a sophisticated piece of equipment called a Reformer, which consists of a wooden frame with a series of pulleys and springs, to create resistance. It looks like it has been designed by a sadist for cruel and unusual torture sessions.

The first modern textbook of pilates (the first of many) was written by Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen in 1980, called The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning. It focuses on 6 key principles: concentration, control, centre, flow, precision, and breathing.
